    second part of homework
    21. The new deal was a success to a certain extent.
Firstly it was a success because it created millions of jobs. This helped make the new deal a success as it helped the American economy as more Americans had jobs to buy goods. They made jobs like WPA which was a national labour program who created useful construction work for unskilled men. It helped more than 2 million unemployed. Another way it was a success was that it stabilised the banking system. It closed all the banks in the country and kept them closed until they passed the legislation. This made the new deal a success because it made American people trust the banks more to invest and put their savings their with confidence. Finally, it showed American people that the government were willing to help by creating jobs and helping businesses.
However, the new deal wasn’t a success because firstly many black Americans were still discriminated against. They got no work and received the lowest wages. They were still segregated from white Americans. This shows that the new deal wasn’t a success because it didn’t end the discrimination against black people. Another reason why it wasn’t a success is because although it created lots of jobs for millions of people, they were only short term so after 1937 unemployment rose again. This shows it wasn’t a success because they were just back to the beginning with millions unemployed. Finally, the only reason why mass unemployment fell was because of Americas entry into WW2. People were needed to fight so it created a lot of jobs. This shows that the new deal wasn’t a success as the only reason why unemployment fell was because America entered the war.
I think that the new deal wasn’t a success because it did create jobs but they were only short term, so once the unemployment raised the economy wasn’t as good as many didn’t have the money to buy. So WW2 helped American economy as it created jobs.

Very good Megan. Remember to evaluate “how far” throughout your answer and reach a more substantial conclusion. Also, the WPA was not a job – it was an Alphabet Agency that created jobs for American people.

    4. What were the main problems with prohibition?

The main problems with prohibition were, the fact that people were setting up “speak easy” Illegal bars where the public could consume alcohol, although it was banned. Also another problem with prohibition was that people were making their own alcohol, this was known as moonshine, moonshine was very dangerous as it could kill people. Furthermore another problem with prohibition was that the government also banned the transportation of alcohol, which meant that people was importing alcohol illegally.

    11. Why did the roles and status of women change in the 1920s?

The roles and statues of women changed during the period of the 1920’s, to a certain extent as the women we expected to get job’s as the men was out fighting in the war. New technologies were more popular, and this helped women as they now how more free time, So they could have more time to socialise or work, most women wanted to open nursery’s so they could get a job. Also women could now vote, they were seen as more even as feminist were fighting/campaigning for more rights for women to be seen as equal. From my own knowledge I know that, in that before the 1920’s most women were seen as house wives, this was the typical view of a woman as most of the time women would stay home and look after the children, and not peruse in education, and if they did a family member would look after the child or children for them.

Fair try Jess. Remember, for 6 mark questions you need to be writing 3 seperate points in 3 seperate paragraphs. You could have also mentioned flappers, and greater independance for women in the 1920s.

Also, in 4, 6, or 10 mark questions you do not need to put “From my own knowledge” because the whole answer is your own knowledge. What you put here isn’t relevant to the question.

    21. How far was the New Deal a success? Explain your answer.

The new deal was a success to a certain extent, people said it had put an end to the “Great Depression” as it introduced new alphabet agencies. Which made the American citizens have more trust in the banks and they were backed up, & were not opened until they knew it was completely stable therefore this made the public more confident and able invest and put their savings there with confidence. Also the new deal was a success as it created jobs for people so they could start earning a wage. Also the government paid the farmers to produce less crops. Which made the farmers better off. The government invested money into industry’s so people, were able to have their jobs back. However the new deal was not a success, as black people were still being discriminated against as the simple jobs they did were replaced by machines. As they were un equal to white people. Also the new deal had down sides, The New Deal didn’t restore employment fully. As the alphabet agencies were creating jobs, the jobs were only temporary, therefore they had to be renewed after 6months if the sill found no job, this was the down said of the new deal. From my own knowledge i know that America soon entered the war and the men went to fight in the war this meant that jobs were created for women, therefore unemployment was reduced.

Very good ty Jess, and good evidence of revision. Make sure to start a new paragraph to show you are talking about the other side of the question.

Also, give examples throughoutyour work of, for example, the new and temporary jobs that were created (pigeon scaring).

  5. jsb says:

4 marker; what was the economic boom of the 1920’s?

The economic boom happened for a number of reasons.
Firstly america had new production lines such as ford were making new cars.
Also the fabric industry was at a high therefor new fashions were available.
Advertising became more popular getting people to buy more products furthermore the confidence in the stock market increased people thought that the boom would last for a long period of time, as a result in a way spending money became more fashionable.

  6. jsb says:

    6 marker;
why did agriculture not share in the boom of the 1920’s?

Alot of people did not share during the boom period, the worst affected was agriculture.
Agriculture did not share in the boom during the 1920’s because at the end of world war one farmers were overproducing, as Canada were producing cheaper & better quality crops therefor this increased competition.
Also farmers lived on the outskirts of towns as a result of this they did not share in the industrial boom, also not sharing in developments such as electricity.
Also the farming industry created mass unemployment as lower skilled workers were harvesting the crops. Consequently they were replaced by machines, combineharvisters meaning that when the lower skilled citizens went to the city to find a job, they were refused.
